The Homestay
Experience
What is
a Homestay? A Homestay is a unique opportunity for a student
to stay with an American family while learning English at a local
school.
Do
students who stay in homestays learn English
faster?
Yes. By spending time with those who
speak English, students are able to learn the language
faster.
What
kind of housing is available from New York Accommodations
Centre? Housing is available in the form of single rooms in
apartments, houses, bed and breakfasts and YMCA
facilities.
Will I have my own room? Yes.
What items will be in my
room? Each visitor's room contains a bed and bed linens, a
desk/study area, dresser/closet, towels and a trashcan.
Will there
be any other students in the Homestay? If a host family has
more than one private room available, there may be several students
in the same Homestay.
Will I have my own
bathroom? Some host families offer the visitor their own
bathroom and some offer bathroom facilities that are shared by the
family.
Will I
get meals? The host family will provide breakfast in a
"serve yourself" style. Dinner is provided each night with the host
family.
May
I make my own food? Yes, with the host family's
permission.
May I request a specific
Homestay? Yes. Please contact us to find out if the Homestay
you are requesting is available during the time you will be
visiting.
Will I receive a key to
the house? Yes.
Will I be able to watch
television? Yes.
Can I use the host
family's telephone? You may make
local telephone calls from the Homestay. All long distance calls
must be made using a calling card.
May I use the family
computer? Yes, but only with the host family's permission.
Please make sure you use a local access number when you log on to
the internet to avoid long distance charges.
May I smoke in the house? Yes, but only with the
permission of the host family. Some host families will ask that you
smoke outside the house.
Can I do laundry in the
Homestay? Yes. The host family will show you where the
laundry facilities are.
Will I be able to go
shopping? Yes.
Will I be able to go sight
seeing? Yes.
Will
I have a curfew (time that I need to return to the Homestay each
night? You do not have a curfew. However, it is customary that you
notify your host family if you will miss dinner or will return to
the house after 10pm.
Can I have guests
come to the Homestay? Yes, but only with the host family's
permission.
Can I stay at
a friend's house during my visit? Yes.
Please notify your host family that you will be staying outside the
Homestay for the evening.

Is there
a deadline for submitting the application? No. We accept
applications at all times.

airport? Yes. Please contact us to make
arrangements.

What are "House Rules"? House
Rules are the rules of the particular host family with whom you are
staying. These rules may include requests to lock the doors of the
home when you leave, or avoid receiving phone calls after a certain
time at night. These rules usually apply to members of the family
and guests. In general, visitors should respect and follow the host
family's "house rules."
